So, you’ve got a sports card collection – is it worth money?
It might be.
There are a number of variables that go into determining the value of sports cards. The big ones are: Player, card age and card condition.
A lot of what we see flooding the market today is “junk” from the 1990’s. There were a bunch of cards printed in the 90’s and no one wants the majority of them. (That’s not to say everything from the 90’s is junk. There are plenty of cards that aren’t – think specific rookies and stars across various sports.) Sorting through a pile of 90’s cards is much like looking for a needle in a haystack.
The older your card and the better condition it’s in, the better.
Look through the cards you have to see if you recognize any names. Look at prices for similar cards on eBay or similar sites that focus in sports cards. Pay attention to the condition of the card as well because it makes a huge difference in the price.
If you find graded cards in the collection (you can identify these because they’ll be in sealed plastic holders with a grading company’s name on the case, along with other information about the card), those often act as a commodity, since a professional grader has given the card a numerical value for its appearance and confirmed its authenticity.
Some people would rather not look through the collection. Perhaps you inherited a pile of cards, or the collection of a loved one and it would be tough to look through it. If you’ve got potentially valuable vintage cards, reach out to a local card shop. (We advise you to still try to do some of your own research.) Some may make an offer, some may not. Most won’t offer to go through the collection for free, so be aware.
